Default 03 EX v6 Power Steering Rack Leak . . .

I just got back from the dealer, and he said that the P/S rack on my 2003 Accord EX v6 was leaking. He showed me the fluid under the car on the boot (cover) under the drivers side, and recommended that I replace the P/S rack. $1500!!

I am more inclined to just top off the PS fluid from time to time instead of pouring so much money into it at this point.

Is this a safe thing to do? Could other problems arise from this leak?

There is no PS fluid on my garage floor. The mechanic/advisor told me that it probably only leaks when I'm turning. I wasn't sure if I trusted him.
Any advice would be greatly appreaciaed.

Thanks!

the racks prolly leaking a little. your rack can still be usable for a long time with a leak. i dont like leaks, and they are not allowed on my car but if you dont care about the car as much then there is no need to replace it.

I also don't like leaks, but i can understand how changing a rack can cost that much, lots of labor goes into it. If you think that the mechanic is a little shady, get the car on jacks and wipe everything down and top off the PS reservoir. Drive around for a week or so and check both the PS reservoir and the rack for leaks. If there is a leak, it will be back after you wipe it off. It is possible that the mechanic walked over with a spray bottle and created a leak.

how many miles ?? 03 is still under warranty if less than 36k.. and even if you have more.. it should not leak at such low miles,,, I would talk to the Honda distyrict manager get the phone # from the dealer and ask that they should fix it for free ..

Also 1500 dollars sounds way too much money.. You can get a reman p/s rack for around 450-500 dollars, .. labor, fluid, alignment.. total bill should be no more than aroung 800-900 dollars ....But again try to get honda to do it for vfree or at least pay a big portion of it..

If the rack is really $500, then it shouldn't take 10 hours to replace it. I didn't know how much a new rack from Honda actually costs but make sure its leaking yourself before you write any checks.

Yes that price is too much for that rack..
you can get one from AUTOZONE for $315.00 plus the $80.00 core which you get back when you bring back your old one.
The rack even has a Lifetime Warranty...this is where I would purchase it!
