Did you measure in from the ends? Or it's more accurate to measure the total distance from one side to the other.

 

I actually did both, measured both ends and the unit itself to get an overall measurement, then did an overall measurement. Ended up with 53" overall both ways.
Had it lined up yesterday and Mechanic said it was pretty close. just had to adjust the left side a little.
