replacement bulb for automatic shift lever console
The light bulb that illuminates the gear selector display, on the console, is burnt out in both my 1996 Honda Civic DX and my 1997 Honda Accord EX. I found the light bulb on Majestic Honda and it has a separate key number. Unfortunately the indicated key number is not listed in the parts listing below the diagram. Does anyone have any idea of an standard aftermarket bulb that will fit the socket and supply a similar light output as that of the original bulb? Does anyone know the Honda Part number for the specific bulb?
Has anyone changed the bulb in a 1997 Accord EX 4 dr? I have the console/arm reset removed. It appears that it might be necessary to remove the radio and the tray (CD if equipped) to finally arrive near the light bulb holder. I looked for online videos and found nothing for 5th generation Honda. I managed to brake the thin metal "U" shaped bracket that retains the rear of the console. The metal is thin enough to shave with. Out of sight ... out of mind .... that must have been what the Honda Engineers were thinking when they designed the bracket.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.
Sincerely,

You need to take off the center console; but, you do not need to disconnect/remove the climate control, I usually leave it on and hanging. (The Honda factory service manual says to disconnect/remove the climate control only if necessary.) I never had to disconnect/remove the climate control.
The available online service manual for the 94 Accord should be similar to your 97 to remove the console. The links are located in the "Common DIY and Other Info." sticky at the top of this forum section.
After the center console is removed, the bulb is accessible under the shifter cover: LEDautomotive.com - Floor Shifter Installation Guide
If you use an online Honda dealer like Bernardi Honda Parts or HondaPartsNow, you'll see the Honda part number listed. The Honda part number is 35505-692-003 (14V 1.4W). An aftermarket that probably will work would be a #2721, specs. 13.5V 1.2W. They appear to be the same part number for both your Accord and Civic.

redbull-1 Thank you for your prompt and kind reply. Believe it or not I searched for the item on Majestic Honda's site. The bulb is shown as key 1 (if I remember correctly) in the exploded view and I thought I was in great shape. The first item listed on the parts brake down listing is key (item) 2. I found a youtube video showing a 200X civic replacement and the individual used a No. 73 and another suggested a No. 74. I am leaning toward a LED replacement if I can find a LED with the wedge shaped base and with a built in voltage limiting resistor. I could add one myself if I knew the correct impedance to add. The rear console mount (an inverted "U" shaped piece of metal) was made out of a scrap can just a little thicker than a soft drink can. I managed to lean on it and I broke the bracket at one of the 90º bends. The part is cheap enough and I will order it from my local dealer in the morning. I am seriously considering replacing all interior lights (lamps) with LEDs. They should be cooler, use less power and never need replacing. I hope they will provide a better and more even illumination. It is more difficult to see the instrument cluster, at night, since I passed 56. I haven't found much golden about the so called "Golden Years." Have you, or anyone else on the forum, made the change to LED? If so, are you pleased with the change and are the gauges any easier to see in the pitch black of night on a country road?
Thank you again for supplying the part number for the shift level position lamp. I will replace the one in the 97 Accord and the 96 civic.
