Replacing the Brake Light Switch on a 2000 Accord

Hi all:
I recently had to replace my brake light switch (the brake lights didn't work and the shifter was stuck in park). After replacing it I noticed that the brake petal was slightly depressed when driving it, so I obviously did something wrong.
When I replaced it, I screwed it all the way in until it wouldn't go any more. I just went out a loosened it a bit and it seems to work fine now. However, there has to be a better way to know I installed this correctly.
Any advice?
