Hello all, I am going to replace the lower ball joints this coming weekend, because it was recommended after 100,000 miles by my mechanic. Also there is a squeaking noise that started recently that I suspect is the ball joint. Since i will have the car jacked up and will be removing the tire etc. I was curious what else I should check while I am at it. I was thinking of replacing the brake pads while I am down there, but was unsure of anything else to do while I have it stripped down. Any advice or tips would also be appreciated as this will be my first time replacing a ball joint. I plan on renting a puller from O'reilly. Thanks for the help!

 

Tie rod ball jts should be inspected. Anti-sway bar end bushings should be inspected and replaced as indicated.

Yes, would replace the brake pads; it must have been on your mind.
I've had good results with okumbotu brand (sp? from TireRack.com) on 2 other cars,
but my current '92 pads (courtesy prior owner) are still wearing well.

 

Hey Y'all! I was able to replace both my lower ball joints without too much issue these past few days. learned a whole lot about the operation of my accord. While I was taking apart the whole deal down there i noticed this tear on the drivers side:
Is that a bad thing? what should I do to remedy this? Honestly< I am a newb and don't even know what that is called!

 

I could not open you picture. Are you talking about the boot for the outer CV joint?

 

Yes! also the brake rotor guard(?) is rusting out and i think it is rubbing on the rotor. What do y'all think? should I replace the boot and the guard? is that a big job? I have also noticed a knocking noise when I am making a turn...

The clicking noise is typical of a bad CV joint. Replacing the rubber boot will not solve the clicking problem.

The splash guard may be a pain to replace. Try bending it back where you see it close to the rotor.

The next time you have to replace the brake rotors would be ideal to replace that shield.
