Is reversing necessary?

Is reversing necessary?
Hey everyone. I've been reading on this forum for awhile and feel I can trust you all...
Yesterday the car popped out of reverse, and has since been making a clicking/nearly grinding sound when reversing. Today it got stuck in reverse until I let the clutch out (with a rather disturbing 'clunk'). All forward gears seem to be working as normal.
Is the transmission going? If so, any idea on a fixing cost? Will it be worth it? The car has 220,000km (137,000 miles).
Thanks in advance for any posts!

It definitely sounds like you lost reverse. It would probably be easier and cheaper to replace the transmission. Look at sites like car-part.com for used transmissions at junkyards in your area.
If your clutch is or wearing out, there shouldn't be any extra cost in installing the replacement transmission at a shop. They have to remove the transmission anyway.
