I have not had the tach jump at all since I replaced the coil. That was the problem. But, as JimBlake said, it will only fix a jumping tach on a 95-97 V6. If you have any engine other than the C27 V6 (the V6 that came in the 95-97 models), it is most likelynot your solution. That was the only model that the tach signal came from the coil.
I never did go in about the emissions warranty, but I plan to soetime soon. I will update if I go in about it

I had a similar problem with my 91 CRX-- The screws holding the pickup coil inside the dist. had come loose.

If you need a DIY, send me a PM and I'll see if I can explain it to you the best I can. Maybe I can provide some pics. All it takes is a 10mm flexible head wrench, maybe a 10mm socket, and a 10mm fixed head wrench. I used all 3 to get to the 3 stupid nuts holding the coil in there. Taking it out is the hard part as you saw earlier in my post. Putting the new one in was cake. I would strongly suggest DIYing this. if you do it yourself, you will thensee why you wouldn't want to pay someone probably $80 extra for labor. It is a mere matter of unclipping one electrical connector, pulling out one wire, removing distributor cap (can be done with a screwdriver), and removing 3 nuts. Oh yeah....you got to unhook the battery first too haha. That one is kind of important!

I have the same problem on my 2001 accord it is Manual transmission.
How would I fix my tach and speedo fluctuation problem. It doesn't happen right away but it will do it after I have been driving for about 30 mins, sometimes it doesn't do it but it does it everyday.

It keeps jumping, I might be going 80 and my speedo will be in 60 just hanging and my rpm will bounce up and down like it is shivering....

any help plz??????

I just wanted to throw this out. I have had RPM fluctuations after the past two tune ups. The engine would shutter and stall when I came to a stop. Both times went to Auto Zone to check the Battery, and Alternator. Nothing wrong with either, both times. The fix was, for the first tuneup, the positive Battery terminal had some corrosion. Cleaned it up and presto! No stalling. Fast forward to the next tune up, and the same shuttering and stalling. What the F%^&? I know my terminals are clean.I had used the spray terminal cleaner, and red protectant. I had made the mistake of spraying the protectant on the post and then putting the terminal on. So on the the second tune up, I removed the terminal from the + Bat post and wiped both. Presto! No stalling. I hope this helps some one out there.

Your fix is not going to be the coil. The only years the coil controlled the tach signal were the 95-97 V6's. If I were you, I would start off by checking that my battery connections are clean and tight. Then have the battery and alternator checked (they should do for free ar AutoZone).

k, so anybody that has this problem really needs to take it in for the 98-081emissions warranty. The service people were great and replaced the coil, distributer cap, plugs, wires, and even changed the oil. i didnt even ask for any of this and it was offered to me. I also had my Timing belt replaced along with the water pump and the other belts. DONT SPEND 70+ BUCKS TO DIY, TAKE IT TO HONDA AND THEY WILL TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING FOR FREE!!!!

Edit: This was with my 97 EX-V6 in burlington, wa... I dont know how willing they are about different models and i am sure that service varies a ton by location...

I have read a lot of responses to fluctuating RPM's.so maybe one of you guys can help me out.
I have a 2002 Accord EX V6 Vtec engine. Idle speed fluctuates from 1000, to 2000 rpm.Replaced Idle Air Control Valve.(Which was indicated by Engine Fault Code) No change in symptoms.
In the meantime, I changed timing belt, water pump, plugs, etc.
Surge at idle still present(I did not expect these steps to fix it, but at 103,000, they were due)
When cruising at highway speeds, when I decelerate, it feels like idle is going to zero, roughly decelerating for a split second. No missing or skipping; otherwise, car runs excellent, plenty of power, only problem is surging idle.
Any help is appreciated.

DrZ...
Beware that much of THIS thread is about the tachometer jumping. NOT actual surging RPM.
