ok I think I know whats going on but figured Id ask on here if it might be something else. I got into work today and found that even with the car off my brake lights were staying on. I slid my finger between the brake pedal and the plunger on the switch, pushing it all the way in and the lights went off. so is the plunger on the switch just shot and I need to get a new switch or is there something else possibly going on??

 

If you unplug the brake switch, and the lights go off, then you pretty much narrowed it down to the brake switch.

You can try spraying some WD40 in there, and hope that it frees the switch.

 

There should be a little rubber pad/button (#25) on the brake pedal, to push the plunger of that switch. Did that come off?? Or maybe something wrong with the bracket that holds the switch?


You get the lights to turn off by pressing the switch. That's how the switch is supposed to work.

 

Switch is spring-loaded to extend when brake pedal is pressed, which closes switch to enable brake lights. If you felt no resistance when pushing the switch closed and it stayed closed, the switch is probably faulty. I've had this symptom on an Acura which was resolved w/ simple heavy spraying of WD40. Worth a try.

...and JimBlakes suggestion was the correct one. that rubber pad fell out I guess. but there was a hole there where something should have been. Id like to know what braintrust came up with that design. but it was a 5 minute fix. thanks for the help guys!
