Default Speedometer freezing up on my '97

when i purchased the car yesterday the speedometer was fine but later that day i would turn the ignition on and the speedometer would rise to a random speed usually 20 and 40 mph without the engine even running. while im driving it will sometimes stick and fix itself and then get stuck again. Its pretty annoying and another of many issues with thiss car.

Its probably the speedometer itself that is broken. Its a fairly common issues on the 94-97 Accords. I'm guessing the odometer isnt spinning either.

Some have had luck resoldering the connections, but I found it easier just to buy a replacement on ebay.

The odometer was not spinning. Today i drove to lowes which was about 8 miles and the speedometer stayed on 20 but once i started the car again to head to walmart the speedometer worked just fine. I was told it was the speed sensor from autozone.

When the speedometer is stuck at 20mph, does the cruise control still work?

In most cars yes it normally is the speed sensor, but in Accords the clusters are far more likely to break.

it must be the speedometer itself. I put cruise control on while the speedometer was sitting at 20 stuck and cruise control worked fine but the odometer does not work while the speedometer does this.

I have the same problem with my 94 accord. The cruise control works but the speedo and the temp gauge do not work. I was told to replace the VSS, but when I did that, the problem did not go away. I'd like to know when/if you get the speedometer working what fixed it.

so can anyone conclude that this is the speedometer? the speedometer connections? and if it is how difficult of a fix is it 1-10? 10 being damn near impossible

Maybe a 3/4?

No matter what you will take out the cluster. Download the 94 shop manual from one of the links in the online manuals thread in the DIY section. That will show you the locations of the screws to remove the necessary components. It isn't too difficult to remove the components.

Now you have a couple of options on how to fix the speedometer. I disassembled the cluster and sent the speedometer off to a place that repairs them, so I could keep the mileage correct. It took about a week to get the speedometer back.

A new speedometer can be installed, but the mileage will start at 0. The dealership may put a sticker showing the proper mileage.

You can also install a used speedometer. The mileage will be wrong as well and you may run into the same problem later.

There were some reports that you could repair the solder joints on the board of the speedometer. If you know how to solder, then you can give this a shot. Search around for posts about speedometer repair. I know one member had success with that.
