Default Starting Issues

drove car to work just fine, no problems. Went to head home car started for about 3 seconds, it made some pretty bad gear meshing grinding noise, and then died. Turned the key again, and the starter spins, but I’m not sure if the engine is turning. I replaced the battery, nothing, then pulled the starter off, teeth are good, and had it tested. They said it tested good. Checked the flywheel for missing teeth, all looked good in there, so that’s not it.

Data:
just changed the timing chain about 3 years ago or less
it’s a 2006 , 2.4 , 4 cylinder engine. Standard edition.
188k on the car,
as a side note, I did have to add just about a quart of oil the other day, but it was running and sounded fine afterwards, and that was about two weeks ago.

You want to check/see if the engine is spinning when the starter is turning.

The engine is not cranking over. I can hear what I believe to be the starter spinning, and that’s all it will do. I was going to try and crank the engine just an inch or two, by hand to see if that makes a difference.

When they tested the starter did the teeth actually engage/pop all the way to the top. I ask this is because I have the same car you have but an ex. I had starter issues. I took mine out and tested it. I noticed that they would engage but not all the way to the top. I rebuilt it and it started working the way it should.

My starter would just spend but was not hitting the flywheel like it should.

May I ask why did you have your timing chain done? When it was done did you replace everything or just the chain? I have 170k on my car and the only thing I have changed was the water pump for piece of mine.

Default Update

Just had my wife crank it over, what I think happened is, when it was low on oil a few weeks back, the timing chain tensioner last pressure and that caused the chain to stretch. I didn’t realize that the serpentine belt was actually spinning, so now I believe that my timing chain or worse, the sprockets within are completely toast. I’m starting at the top and pulling it apart.

i had an oil leak, didn’t realize my oil was so low. When your oil level is low, it won’t provide enough pressure for the timing chain tensioner, resulting in the timing chain stretching and eventually or possibly breaking or breaking other components within the engine.

I just had my wife turn the engine over and realized that the lower part of the engine was actually turning, but I don’t believe the top it, so I’m pulling off the top cover to see what’s happening within.

Ok. Is your car not equipped with the oil light? My pressure was low once before due to not having enough oil put in when it was changed. and the oil light came on. I hope the chain has not broken. Keep us updated.

yes it does, but no it wasn’t on. I don’t necessarily wait for an oil light to come on before I look.

Its not the timing chain at all, I’ve pulled off the valve cove and can see the whole engine turning over, so it’s down to fuel or spark at this point. I’m putting it back together, and will see if it will start with starter fluid, and if it does, then I know I have a fuel issue, if it doesn’t, then I go electrical.

Did you check your camshaft-timing marks? You mention the chain "stretching" but really what's more likely is it skipping teeth on a sprocket.
