Default steering rack problems in accord 1998

Good day to you all friends. My accord 98 is having issue with leaking power steering fluid underneath the car. My mechanic told me i have to change the steering rack. he also told me i can still travel with the car with no problem. what are the consequences of not changing the steering rack? does it cause the steering to stiff. presently i do not have money immediately to change it. how long can i use it?. That is the only problem the car is having. it will cost me $200 to fix( N25,000 or more). 1998 model, Lx, auto trans, mileage 220,000. Hope to hear from you people soon. THANKS

Primary consequence is loss of PS fluid which must be periodically replaced. As long as PS fluid loss rate is tolerable, you can continue to drive.

Leaks on ground may be a problem at some parking locations.

Suggest you consider adding correct amount of Lucas PS Stop Leak. I've seen cases where this completely stopped the leak.

Let us know how you make out.

good luck

$200 to replace a rack with a used one is a steal where I live. If your existing rack and shaft is not bent and it is only the seals then it may be best to rebuild it if you don't have a known good one going into it. Best of luck.
