Default Tansaxel Fluid

HI all Kimberly here. I have a question and really appreciate your help!!!
We have a 1987 Honda Accord LXi Hatchback Manual transmission and were wondering what type and how much Transaxel fluid this lil jewel uses. Your answers are greatly appreciated. Have an awesome day!!!

I have a '92 Accord EX 5 spd. My year takes 2 qts.

Fluid - I've used both Pennzoil Synchromesh (Autozone, etc.) and Honda Manual Transmission Fluid (Honda dealer).
Both make the tranny shift well / feel good.

Thank you for the info UhOh! I was thinking would probably need to consult with a dealership. Given the age of the vehicle none of the Auto Parts stores have the info in their computers! Have a great day

User named Poorman212 likes the older Accords, maybe he'll chime in.

Do you have the owner's manual? Older cars might have called for GL4 gear oil, while newer cars called for 10w-30 engine oil. I don't know what year Honda changed over.

If it calls for GL4 gear oil, then you should use GL4 gear oil.

The newer cars (like UhOh's 1992) that call for engine oil, should use Pennzoil Synchromesh, Honda MTF, or other fluids compatible with engine oil.

Default Thank you

We don't have the original owners manual but we have the repair manual. Funny thing is it refers to page 34 but ends with page 28. So that being said its a little confusing. I appreciate the information on the fluid type you provided and will relate it to my husband. Thank you so so much for your time I do so appreciate it!

Too funny, I'm about the change the manual trans fluid in my 89 LXi this weekend

Use 10w-40 motor oil, it will take ~2.5 quarts (book says 2.3 at change). There is the drain plug, 3/8 ratchet into the square hole of the plug.....this lets the fluid out. Wipe it off, you have to decide on a new washer for the drain plug. Install drain plug.

To fill. Car has to be on level ground. You'll have to get creative on the fill hose. From the pass side fender, look where the pass side cv shaft comes out/meets the trans (might remove the intake tube for a better view).....slightly to the rear and above the inner cv joint there is the "fill plug". A 17 or 19 mm socket - there is a "split" in this gen that I can't remember right now- to remove the fill plug.

You fill the trans - slowly after 2 qts - until it starts to run out of the fill plug. Once it does....install the fill plug.

Edit: here is a pic that might help

Scott, just for my curiosity...
Is there a model-year where the Accord takes GL4 gear oil? Apparently have to go back farther than 89. But it think my dad's 77 Civic took gear oil rather than engine oil.

Jim - must have been the very early Honda's. I had an 81 Accord 5 speed that also used engine oil in the trans.
