I want some opinions on battery terminal replacement. The positive terminal doesn't tighten very well anymore. What's the best type of replacement terminal? Also, what size is the cable? (03 EX V6) Thanks

 

Most all cables for batteries are the same..go to your parts store with your car and have them come out and look at the cables to see what you've got going on there..This is my suggestion to you. Makes it a more simple fix...

According to a link I found the copper compression terminal is better than the regular terminal on the left. Now I'll have to find out what size the cable is.

 

I'm thinking 6 gauge, but I could be off on that.

 

I think you are over thinking this.

If you have a stock car (no large stereo system) and standard universal battery terminal would be fine for you.

 

Are the two cables coming from the Pos side of the battery...one to the starter the other to the fuse box. Can't remember on the 03's?

So if you add a "lug" end to both cables at the battery, then add a new battery terminal with a stud - see first pic. Just an idea.

Not a fan of "shims" that go over the posts but have used them as well.....have one one the positive terminal on my 89 LXi right now.

Or go all out and get new cables.....

The problem I'm having right now, is the cable that connects to the battery is pretty short (it comes out of the harness like a T joint. So I need to get the current terminal off, without damaging the wire, so I can keep it as long as possible. I have a 4" grinder, to cut the old terminal off, but I would probably have a better chance of keeping the wire intact using a dremel, which I don't. Still thinking over the options. The cable itself doesn't look bad, it's just the clamp that looks kind of flimsy.

PS: How easy is it to tell if the battery is leaking around the post? Is that what is causing the corrosion? Or just because it was loose?

 

If there's lots of corrosion building up at the battery post clamps, that's usually because of leaking. Hydrogen gas leaks first, making corrosion. Battery acid leaking just makes it worse. Often it's hairline cracks in the plastic battery case where it's molded around the post.
