Hi everyone. I have been working on a 1992 accord 2.2 DX trying to change the water pump and timing belt. I got past the stubborn crankshaft bolt. now I cannot release tension on the timing belt. I cannot remove the center bolt. anybody have any experience with this or ideas of how to get it off. Is it reverse thread? Is it a long shaft bolt?

You don't remove it. You loosen it a half a turn, push the tensioner in and tighten it gently then remove the belt.

 

It looks like a bolt but it's actually a closed-end nut. Regular, right hand threads. Sometimes it can be really tight. Use a 6-point box end wrench if possible to keep from rounding off the nut; vice grips if the nut gets rounded off.

 

Unfortunately my first turn rounded off the nut. I have tried vice grips and pipe wrenches and lube. It will just not move. I see a little flat black washer up against the pulley, that does not need to come off first does it? If so, how? Thanks

As I reported in that post, mine was a bugger to get off, too. I recommend first heating the nut with a propane torch, then try loosening again.

I went to the junkyard and got a nut. At least now I know what I am trying to take off. I wish mine came off as easy as that one. Thank you for your help

 

Finally was able to loosen mine today. After rounding it out terribly ended up using pipe wrench with a cheater from the bottom and heated it up with propane torch. What a pain in the $&@

A touch of anti-seize on the tensioner stud wouldn't hurt. Definitely use anti-seize on the crankshaft pulley bolt threads and washer.

 

This nut is always very tight. I use a closed end wrench and hit wrench end w/ hammer from below w/o problems.

Temptation is to really tighten very firm, however just firmly tight is adequate. Spec is 33 ft-lbs on 94 Accord.
