Honda ATF is available online from numerous sources. However, I think cost is similar to dealer cost, particularly when you include shipping cost. Occasionally, you can find a good deal on ebay w/ someone who's dumping ATF they no long need.
I suspect the throttle lever provides a bias pressure to the other hydraulic logic circuits. That's why it affects shift quality. It's not clear to me from hydraulic diagrams what the effect might be.
Throttle lever and throttle plate should move simultaneously when correctly adjusted. Manual says you can tighten (shorten) the cable up to 2mm from synchronized position. Suggest starting from the synchronized position and check performance.
good luck

Using NON Honda fluid is a big no no. My old trans hated anything but Honda fluid when I swapped my last trans had my dad’s dealership do it (Toyota). Used yota fluid and the thing would not shift. Then it would not stay in gear. Had to shut it off every 1/4 mile and restart. Only way the car would move. Then used some other fluid the dealer had same thing. Got 16 quarts of Honda ATF drain and filled 2 times it ran but like crap. Did the last 2 drain and fills and it ran until it gave out few months ago. I’m not a fan of autos they all suck..lol
