Default Transmission problems (TCM)

1990 honda accord coupe ex 284710 miles on it. automatic.

one day while driving the car started shifting wrong. it would stay in higher gears. i drove it like an manual car, starting from D1 going up to D4, till i found another tcu. also the sport light would not turn off. so i checked out the tcm (Transmission control module) aka the brain box. two of the capictors were burnt off. so i went to the junk yard tried out FOUR other TCUs. all four gave the same result which was, they would get the sports light to turn off but i was unable to shift out of park.

what i do now is i use the shift lock release and place the car into neutral. then start the car and drive from there. it will drive normally after that, but i will never put it in park since it might stay in park. Reverse, Neutral and drive all work normally.

i dont think its the tcu but something else stopping me from shifting out of park. please help. thank you for the time.

2.2l. i forgot to add that

and by the way, when the problem first occured there was a noise on the drivers side under the dashboard. if i pushed the brake it would stop. i couldnt figure out what it was. and after taking out the burnt capictors, the shaking noise stopped.

In the common DIY thread on top of the gen tech help forum, there is a link to checking engine codes. It is the same procedure for transmission codes, just count the S light.

Post the code(s) you get on here.

Please check for codes....if there are none, you might look into testing the brake and interlock switches.
