Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and I'm also a new honda accord owner! Well, the car is new to me anyways. 2002 Accord EX V6 Auto, leather seats, and a whole lot ofother stuff. I LOVE THIS CAR!!!! It feels like I'm riding in a high end luxury car! Anyways, little did I realize before I bought the car, that Honda has major autotransmission issues with my year. The car has 109,000 miles on it and the transmission works great. Shifts perfect every time. So I have a few questions I was wondering if someone could help me with (I apologize if this has already been talked about before, links to answers on the forums would be great!). So here we go:

1. What exactly goes wrong when the transmission fails?

2. Isthe problemsomething that only a Honda Dealer can service? I'm sure there are plenty of transmission shops out there that could rebuild it or at least get a remanufactured one for a good price.

3. I've done tranny swaps before, how difficult is it to replace the tranny on a honda?

4. What preventative maintenance has been successful in keeping a transmission going? Or is there any?

5. When most of these tranny go out, do they immediately go out, or is it just a gear, or does it take a couple of weeks of noticing a problem before they really go out. I would hate to have a tranny blow up while I'm traveling and get stuck in the middle of nowhere. Anyone have experience with this?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated! And thanks for such a great forum

 

well i know this, its not casue by driving, and always flush NOT CHANGE the tranny fluid when the time comes

 

Thanks for the reply. So, hard driving doesn't contribute to tranny failure?I was thinking that if I drove like a grandma and shifted like a pregnant woman it would help That's interesting.... As for the tranny flushes how many miles is recommended for that to happen?

 

casue trust me i sure as hell dont baby mine (but i have started to latelty), i got almost 150k though

 

I always thought the opposite. Drain & fill only. DONT POWER-FLUSH.

 

x2 .... Honda-s don-t get power flushed ..... EVER.

Mine failed due to faulty lip seals in the tranny. From what I-ve read, there is a bad bearing design somewhere that allows the entire assembly to loosen up internally .... leading to failure. The pressure never builds due to the lip seals and then it doesn-t know when to change.

The tranny is considered non-servicable, but there are shops that will service it. If you intend to keep a 6th gen auto accord for a long time, I suggest upgrading the tranny by either Level 10 performance transmissions in north Jersey near Mt. Creek or by Dr. Evil (not sure where it is located). From my research, Dr. Evil has the better reputation, but both are good.

 

go to honda .com and register under owner , read about the transmissions, i read where the warrenty is good to 107000 miles, however they replaced the one in my oddessy which is a 01 with no problem in one day, i didnt think there was a problem with the old one. as i undersatnd it they had a bad vendor and some of the units were affected but not all, i have a frend that has one with 200 k miles and has never had a problem , so its hard to say what to do. they sometimes go out slowly bu slipping or shifting crazy . good luck
