i had same problem. i replaced dizzy rotor, cap and plugs. when it did start it was 100 times better. replaced fuel filter and that helped more, replaced entire dizzy to weed out a extra problem, which turned out to be my ecm throwing a code 9 (cyl sensor) which was the cause of rough starts and inconsistant non-starting situations.

car runs like a champ now.

no CEL? even after u get it started with the rough start and then smoothing out?

does the CEL come on when u turn the ignition to II(on)?

 

i was having similar problems with my 1996 accord all last week.

the starter was turning and sounded good, but the car was not starting.

i checked the spark. spark good.

i checked to see that air was getting pushed thru. felt good air at the tailpipe.

i deducted there was a problem with the fuel pump, fuel filter, or a distributor issue.

the next day, a buddy of mine recommended that i turn the key all the way on and let it sit for 30 seconds. this activates the fuel pump and give the fuel time to get to front of the car.

... and it worked!

i'm still taking the initiative to get a new fuel filter, throw some injection cleaner in the tank, and possibly inspecting the distributor.
