Default Unable to program keyless remote: 2001 Honda Accord LX

Hi!

Does anyone know why I am unable to program my keyless remote door locks for my 2001 Honda Accord LX?

I misplaced my original keyless remotes to unlock doors when I recenty went on vacation, so purchasd OEM Honda remotes. However have been unable to program them following typical programming instructions.

Does anyone have any advice as to why they are not programming and any fixes? Thanks

Was this the procedure you used?
(1998-2002)

Thanks for your prompty reply Jim. No! I did not follow your procedure per se, but don't think it makes a difference. I say that b/c I've watched several youtube videos of ppl programing rheir Honda remote & none of them point the transmitter at the glove compartment but are still successful in programming the remote. Saying that, however, I jsut went out to my car and follwed your steps...pointing the transmitter at the glove compartment. No dice!

However, here's something else to consider.

In additon to losing my original remotes last month, also lost my keys. So I needed to go to the Dealer and purchase a new key; and obviously, the Dealer had to program the chip in the new key. I'm still researching how there transmitters & receivers work so not totally clear on the mechanics of it all. However, do you think that having gotten a new car key might have something to do with my failure to program the transmitters?

That aside, at 1st I purchased 2 after-mkt transmitters from eBay & they both didn't work. Returned them. And then purchased OEM transmitters. The OEM transmitters actually have HONDA printed on them. And now for this...wondering if it matters which transmitter you get? Because these OEM ones I just got, even though it says "Honda" on them...they're a bit unlike my originals.

They're unlike in the sense of the back of the transmitter. On my originals, you could unscrew the back and replace the battery when it went dead. On these OEMs I just got, the back is sealed and there does not seem to be an apparent way to open it up if need be. Which makes me wonder if they're the wrong ones for my make/model: 2001 Honda Accord LX Sedan vtech engine.

From my little understanding so far of the mechanics, kind of thinking that wouldn't make a difference b/c, from what I read, these transmitters pretty much transmitt at the same radio frequency -- and the thing that makes the difference is the codes that the receiver has. (i.e., the receiver behind -- as I just learned from you, that the receiver is behind the glove compartment).

Also wondering if my fix could be as easy as a fuse that shorted...the fuse that is connected to the receiver?

So what are your thoughts?

Again, thank you very much for your quick and thorough reply. Looking fwd to hearing back from you.

I originally forgot to ask if it's a V-6 car. I only have the shop manual for the 4-cyl, but I THINK(?) the immobilizer and keyless entry stuff is the same.

The keyless receiver is built into the passenger-side multiplex unit, which (per the shop manual) looks like it's in the passenger's kick panel. That looks like it gets power from 3 different fuses:
- passenger-side fuse #13 (white/yellow wire)
- passenger-side fuse #6 (white wire)
- driver-side fuse #9 (yellow wire)
(wire colors just in case you want to open up the kick-panel & look for loose connections)

It seems like if that multiplexer isn't getting power, then a bunch of other things won't work, like windows, lights, & electric locks when you work the little physical button on the door. But maybe one of these power sources is just for the keyless receiver?

I don't think it's related to the keys programming; that is a separate system (the immobilizer) and unrelated to the keyless entry. Actually, you don't "program" the key. You program the CAR's immobilizer to accept the RFID serial# of the key. Just like the above procedure is supposed to program the car's multiplexer to accept the electronic serial# of the remote.
