Vehicle Speed Sensor

Vehicle Speed Sensor
I am going to replace my Speed Sensor. I have a 94 honda accord. From what I understand it is underneath the thermostat housing?? I am having a hard time locating it. Is the VSS something I can get to from above the car or do I have to be under the car??? Thanks

RE: Vehicle Speed Sensor
It's tricky to get to. If your car is standard the best way to descrive it is right below the shift cable, about 4 inches from the rear engine mount. It's below the upper rad hose, and has power steering lines connected to it as well as a single clip for the 3 wires which go to it. It's a little tricky to get at but it's down there.

RE: Vehicle Speed Sensor
You have to remove intake duct for sure to gain access. It is near the thermostat housing. It has a 3-wire connector attached. Two bolts hold in place. When you lift VSS, there is a small link that can stick w/ sensor and drop out as you handle. Link may stay in the engine side, but is essential not to lose. Suggest downloading the 94-97 Accord manual from Online Manuals link in DIY section (hondahookup.com).
You have no speedometer, cruise control, and D4 light and CEL flashing?
good luck

RE: Vehicle Speed Sensor
Failed VSS sounds highly likely.
You may want to check the TCU and ECU codes to be sure. TCU code for VSS is 4 and ECU code is 17. Easy to check. Pull back carpet to expose ECU/TCU module under pax carpet. Two clear windows near center of module will blink (red LED flash) the ECU (LH) and TCU (RH) codes when keyswitch is turned ON. No need to short service check connector.
good luck
