Default VTEC

My son has a 1990 accord lx 2 door, how do I know if it is a VTEC engine? It is a 4 cylinder SOHC, automatic trans. When were VTEC engines made?
Does our accord have a good engine? It seems to be peppy, but I am used to V8 power (torque)
Hey thanks for any reply's in advance.

It would say VTEC on the valve cover most likely. I don't think they had vtec on anything but the acura NSX back in 90, so I don't think you've got a VTEC motor unless it's a swapped engine or something.

A very peppy motor indeed, but it's no torque monster. It is still a good engine (f22a1 I think... could be wrong though) even if it doesn't have vtec. Very reliable.
