vtec won’t work when your throwing a CEL...the ecu is in limp mode.
If I’m not mistaken it's on the pass. kick panel on thos years asccord like the older ones.

The OBD-2 connector (16-pin) has to be within XX? inches of the steering column, so they weren't allowed to put it all the way over to the right. On 98+ Accord it's all the way over to the left, down underneath where the hood-release lever is.

Your '96 probably ALSO has an OBD-1 connector (aka SCS connector). It's a blue-plastic connector with 2 wires. When you jumper that one with a paperclip it makes the CEL flash the code. Is that the connector you're hunting for?

Oh yeah... Not ALL check-engine light events will disable the VTEC. But you still want to get the error code first so you know where to start.

I actually didn’t know that Jim thanx. When I had my h22 when my CEL would pop my vtec always died. But like you said it's only certain codes to stop vatack.

Gotta diagnose & fix the problem.

If you simply reset your ECU (pull the battery cable) then it'll work for a few minutes until it figures out that the problem isn't fixed.

CEL = Check-Engine Light

Here's a good link for you.
https://www.hondaaccordforum.com/for...ead.php?t=2778

Couple different links to different instructions for finding that connector, jumpering it, and reading the error codes.

If the car was salvaged & put back together, then any of this stuff might be disconnected or missing. Can't really predict what's up when that happens.

I think at least one of those instruction links has some drawings of where Honda put that connector during different model-years.
