Default VTEC is finally here!

So I own a 2001 Accord ex, F23 vtec it has 98,000 miles. Ive owned it for 2 years and after the car had been backed into by both my mother and father just recently I finally started hearing/noticing the VTEC sound. Its a mid range VTEC from 2,000-4,000 rpms. So this past week I finally started hearing and feeling the cams do their magic. Is this usual? I dont see how it would go from the same winding sound through all 6,000 rpms to the same winding sound with the mid range VTEC from 2,000-4,000. Not to mention I feel more of a kick through those rpms. Does VTEC just show up one day?
