The check engine light isn't on. Would codes still show any troubles even if the light is off?

Okay I drained the old fluid. It came out a blood red color.
How many quarts of transmission fluid do I need to put? I put in 1 and a half, it was going to be two, but I spilled the first half trying to pour it without a funnel. After checking the transmission dip stick, I'm worried. The fluid isn't even showing on the stick...maybe I didn't put enough fluid?

You drain about three quarts, so add two full quarts, then check the dipstick and keep adding until you add enough fluid to get it to the full mark.

It rarely does.
There are only a few people who have gotten the Auto trans to straighten out once it starts acting up.
A new transmission is in your future, when is the only real question.
Some people drive on an auto acting up for years and others it goes right out.
My trans blew with no warning at all. It shifted just fine and didn't slip at all.
Then one night while going down the highway it just slipped out of gear and never worked again.
I did not want to deal with possibly having another auto blow so I swapped mine out to a 5 speed. It was a lot of work but I feel it will be worth it with reliability in the long run.

Was it expensive to swap it? Did you take it to a mechanic or do it yourself?
I've always felt like I was born to drive a 5 speed, as lame as that sounds. When I drive I only use 1 hand and rest the other on the gear shifter. It just feels natural that way. I actually wanted to buy a 5 speed originally, but everyone told me not to since I didn't know how to drive one yet...

So what does transmission slip actually look like? Ive read a bunch of different things on the web...
I read that One sign of a slipping transmission is higher than normal rpms. What does this mean? I usually get 2.5 before a gear shift while driving normally, and if I'm accelerating hard it only goes to about 3-3.5 before shifting. Idk how to explain it really.

The only thing that makes me think it's the transmission is the fact that my car jerks everytime it shifts gears. Couldn't this just be attributed to bad motor mounts?
