Does the check engine light turn on or the D4 (or S light) start flashing?

I would check for codes. See thread in the DIY section on how to get CEL codes.

If idle rpm is sagging below 500 rpm, the engine may not run and acceleration will be difficult. This is usually the result of clogged idle air control valve (IACV) and very dirty throttle plate.

Check DIY for cleaning and checking the IACV. Throttle plate should be cleaned by reaching in w/ a toothbrush or plastic brush and throttle body cleaner to clean both sides of plate.

Another possibility is poor spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, or distributor rotor. Any weak component of this group can cause engine missing under load.

Spark plug wires can be checked by spraying at night w/ water mist and looking for sparks jumping. Any visible sparks indicates new wires are needed. Other parts should be replaced.

good luck
