Alright cool that's what i thought, i put a sri on my friends car and told him that he needed to get a different filter but he still hasn't done that. This will just lead to less engine life b/c of all the crap that doesn't get filtered out and gets into the engine right?

hey all..i want to get into this discussion! i have a 96 accord EX coupe with the vtec engine. i've been reading the previous posts regarding the intake and cat backs..
i want to add a K&N filter in my car..the question is..which is the best? do i go cold air?
at the same time..i want to do a cat back..it sure sounds like you guys think highly of the magna flow..the question: is there one for me? if i do the combination of these two..what's my net gain?
also, if i did headers..is it necessary to even do the catback?
thanks all..!

I'd go with SRI. I chose SRI based on what people here have said about them. It seems to be a crowd favorite. Cat back is awesome dude. I was surprised how mean it sounds and it seems to help with hp (not a huge gain). I see you are in Oakland (i'm in modesto) so we are both California residents and subjected to CARB. So when it comes to a header we can't get the obx header like so many have since they are not CARB exempt. We are stuck with DC or AEM, both well over 300 bucks.

If you use the filter that comes with the cheap intakes, it leads to less engine life b/c of all the crap that doesn't get filtered out and gets into the engine right?

Lots of questions!

Headers/Exhaust:
If you get headers and a cat back, you lose torque...which Hondas have a minuscule amount of anyway. This will get you off the line a little slower, and going up a hill will be a bit more of a struggle...but yes, your top speed will increase and engine breathing capabilities.

Intake:
If you buy a cheap one, def. replace the filter. The filters are horrible w/ the cheap intakes allowing large particles and other junk to get in your engine which will shorten the life. Buy a name brand one such as K&N or AEM. I would opt w/ the AEM DryFlow, which needs no oiling which is a benefit for cai's.

SRI basically has no chances of hydro locking your engine (sucking up water) b/c its in the engine bay.
CAI is in the fender well so there is always a chance of getting water, and ruining your engine. But you could always buy a bypass valve by AEM which would basically save the engine if this ever occured. With a CAI you may gain one or two more horses, but if you have a filter that requires oiling it will be a pain to oil it every once and awhile.

SRI 1-3hp
CAI 3ish hp
Headers w/ stock exhaust 5 hp
Cat Back varies w/ piping diameter

Since we are talkin about intakes and all that... How would I install one? I pretty much have it all hooked up. I have a 94 accord.I got a AEM short ram. After removing the stock intake there were a total of three hoses. Since the short only takes one which one would it be plugged to it? And what about the other ones?

since you mentioned that about losing torque after mods on our exhaust,is there a way to increase the torque without messing with our mods?

Its really easy! Im sure you have removed the old intake correct?
Do you mean there were 3 hoses connected to the stock intake? I did mine a looong tim ago, but there should only be one hose that is connected to the SRI. Its about 4 inches away from where the actual intake connects to the throttle body. The AEM should have came w/ a small hose that you will need to cut off the right size and clamp it up.

----O Throttle Body
I Intake Conects here
---------o Pipe for small tube.

^I hope that picture helps! Sorry...I dont have the means for a diagram right now. The "-" and "I" represent the intake tube.

Not really, the torque is basically created because of the back pressure. When you add headers and an exhaust it frees up those tight restrictions and you lose torque. HP and Torque dont really go hand in hand on a four cylinder engine. So pick one or the other
