Default Catalytic Converter coming out the end of my exhaust pipe?

hello, my name is ron, i live in atlanta, ga.. i have a 2000 accord lx 2.3 vtech..
when i was driving home from work yesterday, my car all of a sudden pretty much came to a stand still then died... a chemicly smell came thru the vents when i started it back up, so i immediatly turned it back off... when i walked to the back of the car to inspect the end of my exhaust pipe i noticed big pieces of my Catalytic Converter, laying at the end of my exhaust pipe and on the ground outside of it. before i buy a new cat... can anyone maybe tell me what would cause something like this to happen? thanks in advance

What makes you sure you're seeing pieces of the catalytic converter and not muffler or resonator internals?

Pretty good indication of catalytic internals.

Damage can occur when system is extensively operated w/ flashing Check Engine Light. It might occur due to impact damage w/ road during passage over high entrance ramp. It could have been a faulty part that simply failed. No way to be sure, unless you currently have Check Engine Light flashing.

If no Check Engine Light is on, be sure the light comes on for 1-2 secs when keyswitch is first turned to ON. Someone might have removed the bulb to mask stored codes when you bought.

good luck
