Default newbie muffler questions

A few questions about mufflers from a complete newbie. I am wanting to replace the stock muffler on my 1999 accord EX with a new universal muffler. I was thinking about a magnaflow, mainly because I like the way they sound on the accord. My question is, is installing a new muffler as simple as cutting off the old one from the exhaust pipe and welding the new one on? If so, I realize that the inlet to the muffler needs to be the same diameter as the stock muffler to fit the exhaust pipe coming from the cat (correct me if i am wrong). Also, does anybody know the diameter of that generation of accords (1999)? If not, where can I find out?

Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I have learned a lot from this forum and you guys seem to be very helpful people.

Its probably a 2 1/4 stock pipe. You hit it right on the dot with the universal mufflers, just match up the muffler inlet with the size of whatever size pipe you are using and weld it together! Good luck!

What I did was I got a 2.5" inlet flowmaster and bought a 2.5" to 2.25" or whatever my pipe was reducer. Hacked off the old muffler, welded the exhaust hanger on and used a muffler clamp on the reducer. No leaks, sounds great.

you also want to make sure that the inlet an outlet are in the right locations ..... they can be centered or offset.

I just replaced both of the oem mufflers with the street series Magnafow stainless steel universal mufflers with tips part NO. 14814, that is a double wall there is a single wall part NO.14818 that is louder. The one problem is that since they are straight thru and the stocks are not I had to get both inlet pipes bent. If you have to do that make sure that the new pipes are bent with a internal mandrel to form them properly or a wiper type bending machine, no kinks allowed. The sound is great.
