Default proper exhaust diameter????

i just bought a short ram intake off of e-bay for $30 and then I ordered a muffler for another $30 off of e-bay. My question is with the exhaust. My whole exhaust system is rusted out. I mean the cat, factory pipe and muffler. I can stick my hand inside my muffler. The muffler i ordered has a 2.5 in inlet. Is a 2.5 in exhaust too big to run from the header back without a cat or resonator? Should i just run 2.25in pipe and flare it to fit the muffler ? I have nothing done to my 90 accord, until the short ram gets here. After I get back from Iraq i with be installing a built, n/a h22 vtech.

its VTEC. i would read what's in this link, should help. http://www.team-integra.net/sections...p?ArticleID=47

effectiveness for a 2.25" exhaust is about 130hp-200hp, 2.5" about 200hp+. i use the greddy sp2 on my h22, which uses a 60mm piping (2.36") piping, right in the middle of the road for the f22b1 and h22. you basically dont want it too small because of backpressure and you dont want it too big because you dont want to lose exhaust velocity. read the link and learn more.

so a 2.25 would work my basically with a stock motor but if i build a H22 with some decent n/a mods, like skunk 2 cams or brower stage 3 cams, cam gears, polished and ported head, header, chip, and intake, 2.5 pipe should work? what about the cat and resonator? should i replace them or not? i am out of my realm with imports and greatly appreciate all the information.

yes, 2.36"-2/5" would be perfect for that setup. get a 2.5" magnaflow high flow cat, as well as mod whatever header you get to have a 2.5" collector (the outlet tube aka the "1" of the 4-2-1) as well, otherwise you'll create a bottleneck effect right from the start and your other mods wont respond as well. all i did was buy a cheap *** Megan header, had the shop chop off the collector and mod a 2.5" one on, add additional stainless steel piping from the new collector to the 2.5" high flow cat which mates to the 2.36" exhaust. my whole exhaust is full stainless. i highly recommend it.

well the car goes to the exhaust shop on the 15th. I was quoted $250 for mandrel bent straight pipe no cat or resonator, using 2 1/4 from the flex pipe back.
