My car has a skip that has gotten worse over the past few weeks, check engine light is not on ,any ideas ? I think its a sensor and not ignition Issue ,stick your foot in the gas it will clear up a little, but it sounds like its popping back thru the throttle body ?

Welcome to HAF.

I'm a big fan of the old 3rd gen's

Check for codes just to be sure - view the led on the ecu from behind the dirvers seat, open the "window" and turn the key to on.

Tune up items up to date - cap, rotor, plugs, test wires, air filter?

Check the timing - both mechanical and ignition...set #1 to TDC (view the flywheel mark) and then see how the cam ger marks are. Then remove the proper vac lines from the dist and get a timing light to the flywheel marks.

PS - for my own interest - how many doors on your LXi - 2, 3 or 4?

Suggest also checking cylinder compressions. A leaking valve can cause backfiring into intake. Low compression on one cylinder would suggest possible leaking valve. Further checks necessary to confirm valve leakage.

good luck
