Look around on "criagslist" or some other places and see what you find there?

Yes, on these cars the timing belt is important. If you have to pay someone to do the change, I'd guess you'd pay ~$500.

In Kentucky the Honda dealership charges $129.00 for a 4 cylinder timing belt replacement.

Well after looking on Craigslist I feel that 2,000 is a pretty fair price. Found some cheaper but none of them looked as good as this one. I found a 92 that was In great shape like the one I'm looking at, the seller claims that the timing belt and water pump has been changed recently and they were asking 2250.

I feel more comfortable with paying 1500 but 2000 doesn't seem to be a bad price, especially if he is going to finance it for me.

If he's going to finance it for you, he feels very comfortable that the car is good.

Again, ask about the timing belt job. The "normal" miles/time for it being due are 100~120K or seven years. So if it was done within that time you are good to go until it is due.

Just know that when it comes due, it "REALLY" needs to be done.

Not trying to start a debate but a dealer that says they will do this "job" for ~$130. That is a "get you in the door price" - once in, the price will go up. IMHO at the very least while you are there the timing belt, balance shaft belt and the water pump should be changed. Even if you go online to one of the many online dealers and get the "bottom" price for those three things - not even including the shop fees, antifreeze, ect - I find it hard to believe that price is what you will walk out of the door with.......again, not trying to start anything, just my opinion.

Well if all goes well all of those things will have been recently done, that's what I'm hoping for. I can replace a water pump. I have never replaced a timing belt however, only a serpentine belt. If it's not terribly hard to do I'm willing to do it myself. But like I said hopefully it doesn't need to be done

Just know the timing belt is a "job" of sorts. There are actually two belts (timing and balance shaft) then the idlers, then the wp - driven by the timing belt. Some offer "kits" for the job. There are a ton of write-ups on the how to's on this.

Hope you have some time before it is due.

At the end of the day, the decision is yours. Wish you luck on what eer you decide to do.
