names Steven, live in sac. just like the name says I got a 98 lx... its a sedan, stock eng
mods: ceramic dc 4-2-1, AC short shift adapter, cheepy egay cold air, altezza tails, projector heads, blue led interior and dash.
plans for the future, rims ($ willing), coilovers, ... what am i kidding it never ends :P

Welcome to HAF ..... please put car details in you sig for future posts ...... also, there's nothing at all wrong with a cheepie ebay intake as long as you get a quality filter for it. F23A1 is a nice engine and you have the manual 6th gen, so you're doing alright to start with. For a nice bump in throttle response and power, you might want to look at getting a new mid-pipe or cat-back system. The midpipe causes a major restriction in that car. It's small to begin with and there's a smaller tube inside it that carries most of the exhaust. If you like the OEM muffler, but want the gains, have the piping changed for 2.25" ..... you should keep the resonator though. Good luck!

k, got the specs up in the signature
coupple q's, is the resonater that muffler befor the muffler? :Pandthe midpipe is between the cat and the resonater? i'd just have my local muffler shop cut it out and weld a new 2 1/4" piece in? i do want to get a new muffler... something with a deep sound.
what is the benefit of keeping the resonater? smog? sound? performance?
can you get a catback thats c.a.r.b. legal?

Sig looks good! Everything that you asked aboutt he exhaust system is correct. The purpose of the resonator is to help the engine operate smoothly, which leads to a better quality sound. If you remove it, there is a good chance that you will get a bubble sound when you rev the engine high and let go of the gas quickly. That backpressure also isn't great for the exhaust valves, but most likely wouldn't cause any engine problems. The economical way would be to have a muffler shop replace the piping as mentioned. The better quality way would be to buy a tuned cat-back exhaust for the car. The most common of these are Apexi WS2, GReddy SP2 and EVO2.

thats definetly the way i wanna go, cash is the issue... and of course what to tackle next.... coilovers, rims, exhaust.... decisions decisions, probably whatever i can find on craigslist for a good deal soonest
