Default Just one more turbo question please

I've got a 2000 accord 4cyl 5spd vtec

I would like to make my car a lot faster with a turbo maybe, but i dont want to kill my engine. Is it possible with a turbo to run the boost low except when i really really need it and still have a long life? If so how long is long?

Also i see a lot of turbos on ebay for a few hundred dollars and i think its just a ripoff.
Am i right?

How much would a real turbo cost me? And is it easy to install? How much would it cost to have someone install it?

Thanks!

You can control your boost levels numerous different ways. From different wastegate springs to manual/electrical boost controllers. If installed correctly and maintained, a turbo will still wear the engine down more than if the engine were naturally aspirated, but you can still expect 85%-90% engine life. As far as ebay turbos, I've only heard bad things about them so, I'd stear clear from those. As far as price, brand new you can expect to pay somewhere around 600 for the turbo I'd say, but there are plenty of different ways to get good ones for less. As far as installing a turbo kit, you need much more than just the turbocharger. A whole turbokit will run you about $2500-3400, but again, there are much cheaper ways of doing it. Installation of a turbokit would probably run about $800 dollars, but if you do plenty of research and study up, you can buy parts individually and install them yourself if your mechanically inclined. That will save you quite a bit of money.

I'd agree that most e-bay turbo's are worthless... there are however some decent name brand ones on there... the turbo alone is going to run somewhere close to the $500.00 range (give or take $100.00 depending on what's included) however from there you need controllers, piping, down pipes etc... it was done by one of our HAF members for about $1600.00 in parts and installed by him and a friend....
