That was my favorite part of my truck. I don't know how many times I got hit in the back to have no damage but my hitch would destroy the other car. And I used to have a extra long 3 ball hitch, it was long and huge. I remember I was on the highway once, I had to stop b/c of traffic but this civic behind me didn't want to. He rear ended me at maybe 30 mph and my bumper was only slightly bent downwards, while the civic was pretty damaged. My hitch went right through the radiator and hit the engine and stopped. Prolly bent the motor mounts lol.
