Ethical question: selling Honda Accord
This is a 2002 Accord EX, 178,000 in excellent condition, other than this issue. It has had very, very few non-maintenance repairs. We were planning on keeping it a few more years, but have changed our minds, having just got a 2015 CRV. In the past 10,000 miles we have changed the timing belt and water pump, replaced both front and rear brake pads, new Micheline Defender tires, and new headlight bulbs, new wiper blades, and polished the headlights.
I got a check engine light and changed out the gas cap, the light went away.
I offered this to a person at $4500.
Before I could let him see this car, the light came back on. After viewing the car the potential buyer wanted to check the code again, which we did, leading to a $650+ repair for EVAC canister and valves over the gas tank, and not curing the problem, dropping the tank to find a pin hole leak. We are about to replace the gas tank, I just came from the shop.
My repairs will be at least $650, and hopefully less than $1000.
NOW, I am torn between keeping my word to sell this at $4500, or raise the price to $5500 to $5900 to recover some of my costs.
The original person could indeed back out, as he had not committed to buy this in any way.
Would raising the price in light of new unknown repairs be unethical?
IS THIS CHANGING of the offering price wrong on my part?
