Default My 700 mile drive experience

On Sunday and Monday I drove the 2000 LX to and from Brandon, MS to Huntsville, AL. It is about 350 miles (give or take)in each direction. I filled up with gas right before I left. I got to Huntsville with a little more than 1/4 of a tank left. The whole drive I had the cruise set at about 80MPH & the tach was dead on 3000 RPM. So I figured I wouldn't get the best gas mileage. When I went to fill up, I did my normal gas mileage calculating routine (divide# of miles traveled by # of gallons required to refill tank.) I was pleasantly surprised when my calculations rendered right at 35MPG! That's 4MPG better than EPA estimated!
Is my car a gas sipping freak or something?Would I get better mileage if I went 70MPH? (Surely I would!) Ordo these Hondas get better mileage when run in the 3k RPM range?
Anyways...just though I'd share.

most cars are optimal economy between 3-4k rpms, you should get better economy at 70 but probably not by much... My 94 accord did the same thing on a trip from here to spokane (about 240 miles or so) I got just a hair shy of 35MPG...

When my fuel light comes on and I ride with it till the gauge goes so low I am worried I am going to run out of gas, I have never been able to sqeeze more than 14 gallons in my tank. So the spec on MSN that says my tank holds 17 gallons is either wrong or I have 3 extra gallons of gas in my tank when the needle is dead on the "E" and the "low fuel light" is on. Besides, the way I calculated doesn't have anything to do with how much gas was left in the tank. Here's how the calculation was done: When I filled up the last time (to one click at the pump) I reset trip odometer. When I filled up with gas againthe odo said (about) 350 miles. To fill up the tank it took (about) 10 gallons. 350miles/10 gallons = 35 mpg. I don't remember the exact numbers, but the calculation came out to like 34.985 or something like that.

Oh...I see what you are saying though. My original post says 3/4 tank...it should say 1/4 tank. My bad. I changed it.
But how do you explain the fact that I have never been able to fit anywhere close to 17 gallons in my tank when my low fuel light is on than the needle is dead on the "E"? Are there really 3 extra gallons in there?

Honda does that to freak its drivers out. Even when it's on E....you can at least drive another 5-9 miles.

Until I replaced my fuel filter and messed w/ the little doo-dad that sends the signal to thethe low-fuel light, I always had 3gal left when the light came on. As soon as the light came on, I'd fill up, and it would take ~14gal. So once I could trust the light, and I knew I was getting around 30mpg I'd drive 60 mi. after the light first came on. Then the fill-up was 16gal.

So yeah, the light works, and we do have 17gal tanks.

Now that I've messed w/ it, the light comes on w/ only 1 gal.

The other thing that we have to take into account w/ the mpg calculations is the tire size. I went from stock 15's to 17" 45series, whichare about a half inch less in diameter. At 60mph indicated, I'm actually going 56mph. So on a tank of gas, it'll seem like my mpg is better, but it's only because I haven't actually gone as far as the odometer says.

Dang, drove my 600 mile trip to Louisville and only got an average of 24 MPG.
Same problem in the Legend 3Krpm is only 85 mph
But I really lovethe I-64 autobahnfrom St Louis to Louisville;
Too bad the Mental Midgets in Missouri have no concept of "SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT". It's like their brain synapses start misfiring when they get on an interstate,however they will throw the finger and blow their hornswhen ya pass them on the right.

I did the trip again this weekend (my wife is dong some continuing education out of state for two weeks.) I actually remembered I wasn't doing 80mph when I got the 35MPG cause my wife was following me. I was goinga little under 75mph. When I went 80 this weekend, I only got about 32 MPG. One time when my gas light came on I drove for about 30 more miles, but I got too nervous I would run out of gas with no station around so I filled up. Only held a little over 14 gallons. Haha I guess they do make the light so it will come on way before you run out of gas.Maybe one of these days (when I'm bored)I'll bring a gallon or so of gas with me and totally run the car out to see how many miles I can go after the low fuel light comes on.
