are front springs different?

RE: are front springs different?
I need to switch the struts in order to set the nipple into the damper fork. How do I align the holes and angle that fit into the top? Can I simply switch the top damper cap?
When I bought the car the damper forks were instaled with the pinch bolt facing out. I switched the damper forks but of course I need to reverse the struts to make them work. However the holes do not align. When I put the struts on the oppisite side the angle of the damper cap is reversed.

Lay the shock/spring/cap down on a piece of paper or something and trace around it (with the proper cap adjustment) then get a set of spring compressors, compress the springs a little and adjust the cap to match up with the outline you made from the properly aligned one. That's usually the easiest way to do it...

OK, I turned the damper cap but in the end I was unable to place the alignment tab into the damper fork properly. Everything bolts up and it seems to drive fine. Is there any danger in running my car this way?
