They can rub in several different ways.
The outer shoulder of the tread can rub against the lip of the fender.
The inner sidewall can rub against the shock.
The tread can rub against the inner fender liner, especially at steering limits.
The /50 & /40 are the aspect ratio. Larger number means taller sidewall, but it's all in relationship to the tire width.
205 = 205mm wide section (measured in the middle of sidewall)
/50 = sidewall height is 50% of section = 102mm high
Check these for tech info on tire sizes & other stuff.
