axle/Cv/ boot

axle/Cv/ boot
I need to replace a boot, but my mechanic says they'll only replace the whole axle as its more expensive to reconstruct the axle than to just put a new one in, the problem is I'm broke and tho my car isnt making any noises I think they went by the grease inside or the rim.
Anyway I have a big trip coming up: to Florida and I'm wondering if my axle now will hold up. I'm asking for instructions on how to change an axle and the degree of difficulty for someone like me(beginner)
Thanks

Youd have get a quick boot fix kit which are around $20( I think) and a place would charge about $80ish to do one of those.. However, they dont last very long. I have had each of my axles replaced and it is about $160 per side w/ parts + labor. If you do it yourself you can get the axles for about $80-100.
I have never done it myself, so idk about difficulty.
I would not make the trip w/ a bad boot. If it goes completely bad you will be stranded and then you'll have to pay for towing. When it starts to shimmy when you turn then it is getting pretty bad. However, recently while putting my winter wheels on I noticed all the grease and then found the split boot. I never would have known until it started shaking.
