I am the new owner of a 2001 EX Coupe 5 speed. I will be doing a good deal of highway cruising and would like to reduce revs a little.

The ideal solution would be a different set of 5th gear cogs. This way I would not lose lower gear acceleration. I don't see a tranny forum here, so I am asking here. Is it possible/practical swap out 5th? If not, what about going a bit taller on tires. I currently have a new set of firestone firehawk 195/65/15s. I was thinking maybe a 205/65 or maybe 195/70.

If anyone has any experience with this, I would like to hear their opinion.

 

Switching to either 195/70s or 205/65s won't make an appreciable difference in your RPMs at highway speed; I haven't done the math, but I suspect it would be less than 200 RPMs, possibly less than 100.

 

OTOH, the V-6 cars come with larger tires, can't remember what size. Go to TireRack.com & put in your car except pretend it's a V-6. That'll tell you the tire size.

 

205/65 R15 if I'm not mistaken.

Edit: Confirmed; the above size is used on the Gen 6 V6 models.
