Default dealing with decaying leather steering wheel

Hello I have a 99 EX V6, full leather interior.

My steering wheel leather has been slowly deteriorating over time. I used to have one of those slip over covers on it, but they look cheesy IMO

My interior is tan. I was considering taking a razor blade and carefully slicing the stitching on the factory leather and peeling it off...

But my concern is that underneath will be a black wheel or some other color, or that there will be tons of unremovable adhesive on the rubber wheel underneath.

Has anyone decided to slice off the rotting leather, and it so, what did you find? Thanks.

Less work to find a used wheel. Check car-part.com and ebay for options.

Some of the wrap-on covers look OK to me, but not as good as OEM.

good luck

The thing is that I don't want the leather wrap anymore. The car has 170K and I'm only budgeting on having it for another year. The leather always evetually falls off. If I can peel back the leather and just have the same colored rubber I would do it in a heartbeat. What I don't want is to cut it back and have a black rubber wheel or some other color.
