Well, all I can tell you is that the system (Multiplex Integrated Control System) is hideously complex and includes self-diagnostic procedures. You may be able to extract Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) and find the problem.
The procedure for interrogating the system and interpreting responses is far too large to post here. Suffice to say, you need to purchase a Honda Accord Shop Manual (2003-2007) (helminc.com and other sources) and go sleuthing on your own. DTC's are displayed by the odometer (last 4 digits). There appear to be 50-75 different codes.
good luck

i also wish you good luck troubleshooting that system.
what about when just the parking lights are on - do they work then?
do they ever illuminate? i assume you can read the display fine during the day, what about if you turn on your headlights on during the day?
i suspect when you turn on your headlights the system thinks it's dark outside and it adjust the display for night viewing... but it's not doing that correctly due to a failure somewhere. if it's intermittent it's usually a bad solder joint. easy to fix, difficult to find.
