Default 1986 Accord LXi - PGM-FI Light is on

Hello All,
The other day, my PGM-FI light came on while I was driving to get the car smogged (in California). The light did not come back on when the tech drove the car into the smog-check bay and I figured it was a fluke. The car passed the smog check so the car was running alright, at the time.

Today, the light came on again when I was driving the car home. I have not tried re-starting the car, since I figure I should get a better understanding of what that light is trying to tell me!

I seem to recall that some diagnostic information is stored (somewhere??) when this light comes on, but I can't recall where it is stored or how to access/read this data.

How do I troubleshoot the cause of a PGM-FI light?

Thanks,
-tomas

Under the drivers seat-PGM-FI/CEL codes can be read.

From the back of the drivers seat there is a plastic cover over the ECU, there is a window on the plastic, pull from the top.

Turn the key to on/pos II. Count the flashes, there is a ~2 sec pause between the codes. If only one, it will just repeat over and over.....good thing the smog guy didn't know this

Thanks!!

One more quick question:

If the PGM-FI light is no longer on, will the codes still flash?

I was expecting the smog guy to say something, but since the light went out, he didn't know anything was wrong. Which is why I'm curious to see if the lights is still on when I get to the car, or if the light is off again.

I saw a link on the thread related to the CEL, related to what the codes may mean. Are the codes the same as the CEL codes? (It sounds like they are).

Yes the ECU has "Stored" the code....the "smog" guy just didn't want to put his head back there, or didn't know.

Not sure what "link" you saw, so hard to say....OBD0 codes are what you need. If unsure, let me know and I can confirm.

Coolant temp is code 6, I don't own a 3rd gen anymore but memory tells me it is two pins, located around the dist area. Not the one for the temp gauge, the one for the computer
