Two options.
1. Swap the "housing" from the old engine to the new one. Gears and all as the lower one has the "trigger" to the sensor.
2. "Back wire" an OBD-I dist to the wire harness of your 97. The dist on the 94-95 had the sensor inside the dist.
I'd go with option "1" since I would be doing a "timing belt job" on the new engine anyway....so I would already be 1/2~3/4 of the way there.
