Default 1999 Honda Accord Transmission Issues

Hi I am new to the forum I hope this post doesn't frustrate those of you veterans but I am looking for advice on how to proceed with this vehicle.

I have a 1999 Honda Accord, 4-cylinder 4-door automatic. I believe it is an EX model but I will have to verify that when I get it back from the shop.
The transmission is likely going to blow up at any moment. The mechanic suggest within six months depending on how you drive, how much etc. I am thinking about rebuilding the transmission as a project myself since I can't fathom sinking more than about $1000 on this car. It is a piece of crud w/ 161k miles and could be driven off a cliff for all I care. It is however my girls ride and I would like to keep it on the road at least as a grocery grabber until we get something more reliable. Can you point me in a direction for perhaps a guide on rebuilding this type of transmission and make suggestions about time, cost etc. I have (most) the tools needed to do the job and work space, as well as the mechanical knowhow but could use some guidance on things before I get started tearing her car apart. Thanks!

I work on automatic tranys at the dealer. You have the tools to do it but have never done one? I would back away from that one. Even if you have trans building experience, Do you know anything about Honda Automatics. If not you'll absolutly get lost. No offense .. just saving you the trouble.

Find a used good one in a Junk yard. Price those and see if it's worth saving.

Look in the DIY section for a thread about manuals. There should be a link to an ISO file with a shop manual. There should be a whole section (couple hundred pages) on the automatic trans. Read that so you know what you're getting into. Then decide...
