Default 99 Accord timing belt replacement?

Hello,

I have a 99 Accord with 67,250 miles. The dealer recommended that I replace the timing belt because the users manual says to replace at 7 years or 105,000 miles. They are asking $880, but this includes replacement of the other belts as well.

Is it really necessary to replace the belt before I reach 105,000?

Thanks.

That's pretty low miles for an 11-year-old car. Maybe a fair amount of short trips? Besides the timing belt goes with simple age along with miles.

Considering that a broken belt lets the pistons hit the valves (big huge $$$) it's probably a good idea to replace it. Get a new balance-shaft belt too. Many people say get a new waterpump because if the waterpump starts leaking in a few months you'll have to do the entire job over again.

I would find an independent Honda-Certified shop. $880 is outrageous. Dealerships always charge more than independent shops.
I paid around $450 for mine at an independent shop (dealerships quoted around $650) when I got it done a few years ago and still feel like I got ripped.

did 450 include parts? and did you just get the belt changed or did you do belt, tensioner and water pump?

I agree the $880 quote is too high and you should ask for a quote from an independent Honda garage but make certain they install OEM/OES belts, tensioners and water pump. Aftermarket parts are somewhat cheaper but are usually inferior and have a shorter life.

It's a 4.5-5.0 hour job and OEM parts are ~$250 alone. At $90/hr and parts, a good ballpark estimate would be $700 + tax anywhere you go.
