Default Engine Problem....I think

1994 accord LX 2.2 about 195000. Was driving a little "sporty" the other day and at the end of my "run"I noticed this aweful sound coming from the left side or drivers side (which ever way you are looking at it) of my engine. It sounds like a popcorn machine with a lil grinding at the end. I opened the hood and it sounds like its coming from that houseing surrounding the cam gear. Something is deff loose or grinding. Can any one help me with this. Maybe something like the order of which I should trouble shoot.

Thanks

your best bet is to pull of the lower cover of the cam gears and see if anything fell in there. also while its off check the condition of your timing belt. it sucks to replace once it breaks, alot more hassle plus the chance of bending your valves.

is it possible to "pop-off" a valve spring @ high rpms. I was told this also might be the problem. The person would toldme this listened and said it sounds like its comin more from the top of the engine than from the cam-side. He said the "rattleing" or "popcorn" sound could be a loose/broken vavle spring.

well the car is running fine honestly. I have been driveing it everyday since it happened and really been keepin an eye on the basic stuff like engine temp and oil levels. Every thing is normal. but that sound just makes me nervous. I know i should of stopped driving it but i work 2 jobs and I cant. I am bringing it to a freind tommorow but i wanted to see if there was a protocol on that type of sound and the location of it. This is weird. He maybe we'll be doin the F20b convertion sooner than we thing huh. One can only dream

It's relatively easy to remove the UPPER timing cover. Do that & have a good look around in there.

You need to remove the crankshaft pulley before you can get the lower cover off. That's a lot of work (unless you haveTHE TOOL.)

It might be a tensioner pulley or waterpump almost ready to seize up & shred the belt. I think you'll want to figure this out BEFORE that happens.

The basic stuff like water temperature & smoothness will be perfectly fine. Until the moment the belt breaks.

do as people advice,, make sure to where the noise is coming from, them remove the cover to inspect the area .. chk the cam pulley bolt, it could be loose .
