Default F23A1 versus J32A1

Hey there,
so I am currently an owner of a 01 cg6 and it’s been a blast so far to own. I haven’t done any modding or bolt ons yet and the 150~ bhp that the engine puts out seems to be pretty zippy. Down the road, if I can keep the rust down to a minimal in the winters. I have plans of tearing it down and restoring anything that it would need it, I.e seals, gaskets ect.

But the more research I do, to keep it a fun daily, am I better off finding a newer gen with the V6?

Given the added power output and relatively similar mpg, would that be a better daily I could dump money into? Not that Im looking for a race car but I would still want to keep it fun if I get to chance to take it to the track. I know that the added weight from the different gens make it a strange power to weight per each gen.

I would also like to touch on, I’m not super mechanically inclined but new information is always better so if anyone could shed some light.

Thank y’all

If you're going to try a few mods, stay with the 4-cylinder models, they are much more buildable; that and you can get them with a manual transmission which can handle the power better..

I thankfully currently have the 5speed so that’s already out of the way, but would it be worth it to than just keep the F23 and potentially build it out?
or rather use it as a daily and find like a B series or H series?
ive heard the F-series stock internals are better from the get go versus the other Honda engines.

Staying with the four cylinder is smart, and if you are hell bent on doing a build, then it makes for a good base. Regarding which engine to base your build upon, that I cannot answer. Why? I am firmly in the camp of, "It will be better, faster, and cheaper to simply buy something which came from the factory already faster." Think about it this way, for the money you would spend on a build, you could sell your current car, add the "build" money to the proceeds, and buy something like a 3G TL or Gen7 Accord with a V6 and a 6-Speed Manual transmission. You will end up with a car which will be FAR more reliable for a daily driver while at the same time being a good bit faster than your current ride.

Currently I’m not crazy bent on anything specific. All of my contemplation is currently more or less planning things out rather then going and buying.
I don’t have as much credit room as I was hoping so it’s all kind of on a back burner.

My only intrigue is based on there are not a whole lot of successful daily’s on that platform. Which I presume if for a reason but as my knowledge keeps growing I hope that I’ll be able to get around any problems if I stick with it.

but again, currently is all thought and planning.
my accord has nothing special besides some new maintenance parts.

if I were to look in the direction of the v6’s, would anyone have any opinions as to what would be the most reliable?

Other than the 3.7 liter J37A4 motors in the 2009-2014 TL SH-AWD (and some say all J37s), the J-Series motors across the board are extremely reliable engines typically good for 300,000+ miles by simply following the factory maintenance schedule. Said another way, for the cars you're considering, reliability is not an issue. Assuming you're looking for another manual transmission car, the 6-Speed in the Accord and the 6-Speed in the 3G TL (2004-2008) are both very reliable transmissions, the only difference between the two is the TL version has a built-in mechanical LSD (and also factory Brembo brakes).

The above said, if you are planning on a build stay away from the V6 cars; to gain any amount of power improvement it will cost you easily three to four times that of the I4 cars. The simple fact is, "V" style engines do not lend themselves to being turbocharged due to the exhaust manifolds being split and the width of the engine; I4 engines do not have either limitation.
