Default High idle - 1987 DX

Hello,

I've got a 1987 DX with 275k on it. It runs great for the most part, except for an idle problem. When I first got it it would start off idling around 2500 sometimes, and gradually make it's way down (note the high idle would last long after the engine warmed up, so I don't think that's normal). It would then idle at about 1200. I adjusted the idle screw so that when it calms down it's at about 900, but it still races upon starting and sometimes for quite a while. I'd like to figure out what's wrong, rather that masking the problem by simply lowering the idle. Anyone know why it was high in the first place or why it stays high even when warm?

Some thoughts I have had: It almost seems like the throttle is "sticky," but I check the cable and is snaps right back very strongly. I've read about the PCV valve, but followed the instructions on here to find it, but to no avail (is the location different on a carb then on a FI?). I've looked for vacuum leaks, but couldn't find any. That's about it. I've also thought about using a carb cleaner like seafoam, but I'll use that as a last resort.

Thanks!
