Default [92 ACCord EX] California Smog Issues and ABS Issues

Hi all,

Working on moms car again. This time she needs to pass a smog test.

I recently did a successful head gasket replacement w/the help from you all great people here at Honda Accord Forums . Thanks again btw.

So now I have a couple of new issues that need to be addressed.

First and foremost is passing a California Smog Test which is due by March 8th.

When the car is running I smell gas coming ouf of the exhaust. Come to think of it I never did check the Ignition Timing after replacing the head gasket. I might need help w/that as well.

She Did have a new Catilitic Converter replaced about 2 years ago when her last smog test failed.

I'm wondering how to test the O2 Sensor. I think I may have damaged it while I was doing the head gasket by pulling & pushing on the header pipe too much while trying to remove it not realizing the O2 Sensor was connected .

If the O2 checks out ok then I'll go through the hassle of cleaning out the EGR System but I want to get the easy work out of the way first.

The next issue would be the ABS light is always on up on the Dash. I'm hoping it's not to big of an issue for me to test and reapair ans was hoping to get detailed instructions on what to look for and how to check the ABS system.

As always any and all advice is very much appriciated.

Tony

You can check for ABS codes the same way you would check engine codes. The only difference is that you count the ABS flashes. ABS codes have two numbers like, 1-4, 3-8, etc.. See the common diy thread on top of the gen tech help forum for a link to checking engine codes.

Thank you PAhonda,

The car does not have any check engine lights other than the ABS light.

So That should help me get the code for the ABS.

I'll post back here once I have the ABS code/s

OK so I put the paper clip in the blue two pin wire harnes to jump the two wires and I get the following results.

The Check Engine light stay on constantly "No Flashing Involved"

The Transmission Red P Light for Park Stays on constantly "No Flashing Involved" w/o any D4 flash codes

The ABS Light Flashes 3 short flashes but each flash is on a delay in between each quick/short flash.

I don't know what that code would be. Would that be 3 or 13?

Here is how the ABS flashes codes.

1. When you turn the key on, the ABS light will turn on for about two seconds.

2. There will be a two second pause with the ABS light off, then the abs light will flash the main code with very little time between flashes.

3. After the main code flashes, a one second pause will happen then the sub code will flash with very little time between flashes for the sub code. Note, if you have no sub-code, there will be a 5 second pause.

4. After the five second pause, the next main code will flash.

ABS can only store up to three codes.

The ABS codes will not repeat, so you have to turn the key off then on to double check your codes. I suggest you double check the codes.

Ok here the ABS flash codes I get.

Key on.

ABS light goes on for 2 seconds.

ABS light off for 2 seconds.

ABS light flashes very fast 1 time.

ABS light off for 5 seconds.

ABS light flashes very fast 1 time.

ABS light off for 5 seconds.

ABS light flashes very fast 1 time.

Long Pause and no more codes.

Does this mean I am getting the same code 3 times and the code would be code 1- w/o any sub codes?

I'm guessing that it stored a code 1 on three occasions.

A code 1 is for the abs pump motor over-run. For starters, check that the fluid in the ABS reservoir is filled to the proper level.

Thank you PA

I opened the cap and looked inside but don't know how to determine if the fluid level is low.

It's pretty cold, windy and rainy outside atm so I just unscrewed the cap on the ABS unit and looked inside. It lookes like there is some fluid in there. First time ever looking at that thing so it's all greek to me so far.

The outside of the white plastic reservoir has all kinds of dirty oil and dust covering it. If there is fluid level indicators on the outside of the ABS reservoir it was not visible for me to determine levels from the outside.
